Stainless Steel Wire Mesh Screen Size Chart

If you are confused with the screen mesh size chart, these explanations may help you to understand.

We also call mesh count as mesh size, mesh number.

The numerical value indicates the number of openings / holes per linear inch of a woven wire mesh. We can say we need meshes, such as:

• 20 mesh Nichrome wire mesh
• 45 mesh Nichrome wire mesh
• 60 mesh Nichrome wire mesh
• 40 mesh Monel K500 wire mesh
• 20 mesh Hastelloy C276 wire mesh
• Usually, the larger the mesh number, the more openings per inch, the smaller the screen opening size, the smaller the particle that can pass through the mesh.

Wire mesh size is not only assigned a mesh number, but also denominated in microns. For example, we can say we need

• 40 micron mesh
• 70 micron stainless steel mesh
• 75 micron mesh screen
• 250 micron mesh screen
• 300 micron stainless steel mesh filter
• copper mesh 200 micron

Mesh size means the number of openings per inch. But micron tells us the nominal opening size, and they can convert to each other. For instance, from the stainless steel wire mesh screen sizes chart, we can figure out that

• 80 mesh to micron 150 or 180 due to different wire diameter
• 200 mesh to micron 73.7
• 400 mesh to micron 37

It is the thickness of one wire.

The thickness of mesh is roughly equal to warp wire diameter plus weft wire diameter. For plain and twill woven wire mesh, it’s two times the wire diameter because warp wire is the same as weft wire.

The dimension between two adjacent parallel wires, usually measured in inches or millimeters. But the opening is not affected by the diameter of the wire.

Mesh number = 25.4 mm / (wire diameter [mm] + opening size [mm])

The proportion of the opening area in the total screen area is expressed as a percent. See the following function.
