What is 310 stainless steel wire mesh?
310 stainless steel wire mesh is produced by weaving wires in an over-under pattern. Its warp and weft (woof / filling) wires are interlaced at right angles. In other words, each warp wire and each weft wire pass over one, two or other amounts of wires, and then under the next one, two or other amounts of wires. For example,
- Plain woven wire mesh is the mesh where warp and weft wires pass over one, and then under the next adjacent wire in both directions.
We also call it as 310 stainless steel mesh, 310 stainless steel wire cloth, stainless steel 310 mesh, ss 310 wire mesh, 310 ss mesh, 310 ss wire cloth, etc.
310 ss mesh varies widely in its mesh size, wire diameter, hole size. Moreover, it can be cut, formed into many kinds of shapes, like round wire mesh disc, rectangular woven mesh filter discs, metal mesh filter caps, filter screen tubes, …
As a result, 310 stainless steel wire mesh is suitable for a wide range of environments.
Material
Type 310 is also known as T-310, T310, SUS310, UNS S31000, SS310.
We also call it 25-20 stainless steel as a result of its 25% chromium and 20% nickel composition. So because of its high chromium and nickel content, 310 stainless steel mesh provides better performance to 304 stainless steel mesh in most environments.

Weaving type of 310 stainless steel wire mesh
Plain weave, Twill weave, etc.
Weave types are different because of different interlacing of warp and weft wires and different wire diameter.

Mesh metrics: mesh counts, wire diameter and hole size
Mesh counts: 2-200 mesh
Wire diameter: the thickness of one single wire.
Opening / Aperture / Hole size: the distance between two adjacent parallel wires
Micron size can also help us to specify the needed stainless steel 310 mesh size. That’s because it typically refers to the nominal hole size. For example,
- If you need 73 micron mesh, we can say its opening size is roughly 0.073 mm. From the mesh screen size chart, we can also figure out that mesh size may be 200 because its opening size is 0.0737 mm.
What is the size of wire mesh?
We also call the size of wire mesh as mesh size, mesh counts, mesh numbers. It means how many openings per inch or 25.4 mm. So for any one liner inch distant, the higher the mesh size, the more the quantity of holes, the smaller the size of the opening. And then the smaller the particle can pass through.
For example, from the following chart (a part of the mesh screen size chart), we can see that mesh size 200 is larger than 150. However, its opening size is only about 0.0737 mm, which is smaller than the hole size of the 150 mesh screen.
Mesh size | Aperture size (mm) | Wire diameter (mm) |
---|---|---|
150 | 0.1041 | 0.066 |
200 | 0.0737 | 0.0533 |
Please note: if we only know the mesh size, usually, we cannot confirm the needed mesh.
- Material, wire diameter and aperture size are also necessary.
- A drawing or a simple sketch is also essential for deep processing products with special shape and size.
What size is 40 mesh?
It’s the 310 ss wire cloth which has 40 openings per linear inch in both directions. Its wire diameter can be 0.254 mm. If so, the opening size will be 0.38 mm, and micron size is 380. Therefore, the mesh can save particles over 0.38 mm, and filter the others smaller than 0.38 mm.
What is the meaning of 20 mesh size?
It refers to the 310 stainless steel wire cloth in which there are the same amount of openings per inch in both lengthwise and crosswise. 20 (also called 20×20) mesh screen is a 310 ss mesh in which there are 20 openings per inch in both directions.
How thick is mesh?
Thickness of woven wire mesh is related to its wire diameter. The overall thickness is approximately equal to the warp wire diameter plus the weft / filling / woof wire diameter.
Customizable
310 stainless steel wire mesh can be customized as required, and it can also be cut, formed, etc.

Characteristic of 310 stainless steel wire mesh
- High temperature resistance
- Oxidation resistance at 2000℉ temperatures
- Corrosion and rust resistance
- Acid and Alkali resistance
- Good strength
Applications of 310 stainless steel wire mesh
310 stainless steel mesh is commonly used as heat resistant mesh, high temperature mesh. That’s because its high chromium content makes it resistant to oxidation when heated. The maximum safe temperature is about 2000°F.
310 ss wire cloth is also suitable for applications where a combination of corrosion and oxidation resistance, high strength, and toughness is essential. For example,
- 310 stainless steel wire cloth is commonly used in chemical processing equipment, heat exchangers, and oil field / refinery equipment, furnace equipment.
SS 310 wire mesh is commonly used in industries of Chemicals, Oil, Aerospace, Automotive, and so on.
