What is duplex stainless steel wire mesh?
Duplex stainless steel wire mesh is a woven wire mesh where 2205 | 2507 warp and weft (woof / filling) wires are interlaced at right angles. In other words, each warp wire and each weft wire pass over one, two or other amounts of wires, and then under the next one, two or other amounts of wires.
For example, twill woven wire mesh is typically the mesh where warp and weft wires pass over two, and then under the next two successive wires in both directions.
In addition, two distinct sets of wires are straight and at right angles to each other.
Weaving type of duplex stainless steel mesh (2205 | 2507)
Plain weave, Twill weave, etc.
Weave types are different because of different interlacing of warp and weft wires and different wire diameter.

Mesh metrics: mesh counts, wire diameter and hole size
Mesh counts: 2-200 mesh
Wire diameter: the thickness of one single wire.
Opening / Aperture / Hole size: the distance between two adjacent parallel wires.
We can also know something about the mesh from micron size. That’s because usually it refers to the nominal opening size. For example, 300 micron stainless steel mesh has 0.3 mm hole size. 250 micron mesh screen possesses 0.25 mm aperture size.
From the mesh screen size chart, we can also figure out that 80 mesh to micron is about 150 or 180. So why two? That’s because there are two choices of wire (0.165 mm and 0.140 mm). We know that there is a function between mesh counts, wire diameter and opening size. So for the same mesh counts, if we change the diameter of wire, and then the hole size will be different.
Characteristic of duplex wire mesh
- Excellent corrosion and rust resistance
- Acid and Alkali resistance
- High strength
- Good fatigue strength
Applications of duplex mesh
2205 duplex and 2507 super duplex mesh are widely used in petrochemical, food processing, seawater, and oil field industries.
Actually, 2205 duplex wire mesh and 2507 super duplex stainless steel wire mesh are less frequently used stainless steel alloy. Because for the most environments, the combination of superior corrosion resistance and strength isn’t essential. T-316L, T-316 or T-304 may be a better choice because theirs performance are better enough for those environments and theirs cost are low.
