What is nickel mesh?
Nickel wire mesh cloth is a metal mesh, and it may be woven, knitted, expanded, etc. Here we mainly introduce nickel wire woven mesh.
Nickel mesh is also called nickel wire mesh, nickel wire cloth, pure nickel wire mesh cloth, nickel filter mesh, nickel mesh screen, nickel metal mesh, etc.
So how is woven wire mesh made?
It is produced by weaving two distinct sets of pure nickel wires (warp and weft / woof / filling wires) at right angles. Each warp and weft wire passes over one, two or other amounts of wires, and then under the next one, two or other amounts of wires. There are four main weaves according to different inter-structure of the mesh: plain, dutch, twilled, twilled dutch. For example,
- Plain woven wire mesh is the mesh where warp and weft wires pass over one, and then under the next adjacent wire on both sides.
- Warp and weft wires of twilled woven wire cloth need to pass over two, and then under two successive wires in both directions.
Nickel wire woven mesh varies widely in its mesh size, wire diameter, hole size. Moreover, it can be cut, formed into many kinds of shapes, like round wire mesh disc, rectangular woven mesh filter discs, metal mesh filter caps, filter screen tubes, … As a result, nickel wire mesh is suitable for a wide range of environments.
Weaving type of nickel wire mesh cloth
Plain weave, Twill weave, etc.
Weave types are different because of different interlacing of warp and weft wires and different wire diameter.

Chemical composition of Nickel by weight (%)
Grade | C (Carbon) | Cu (Copper) | Fe (Iron) | Mn (Manganese) | Ni (Nickel) | S (Sulfur) | Si (Silicon) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Nickel 200 | ≤0.15 | ≤0.25 | ≤0.40 | ≤0.35 | ≥99.0 | ≤0.01 | ≤0.35 |
Nickel 201 | ≤0.02 | ≤0.25 | ≤0.40 | ≤0.35 | ≥99.0 | ≤0.01 | ≤0.35 |
Nickel 200 vs 201: In comparison to nickel 200, nickel 201 has almost the same nominal elements. However, its carbon content is low.
Mesh metrics: mesh counts, wire diameter and hole size
Mesh counts: 2-400 mesh
Wire diameter: the thickness of one single wire.
Opening / Aperture / Hole size: the distance between two adjacent parallel wires.
Micron size can also tell us something about the nickel wire cloth. Because it typically refers to the nominal opening size. For example, a 250 micron nickel mesh screen possesses 0.25 mm aperture size. 75 micron nickel mesh possesses 0.075 mm aperture size.
We can also figure out that 80 mesh to micron is about 150 or 180 from the screen mesh size chart. So why two different sizes? That’s because there are two choices of wire (0.165 mm and 0.140 mm). We know that there is a function between mesh counts, wire diameter and opening size. So for the same mesh counts, if we change the diameter of wire, then the hole size will be different.
How do you calculate the mesh size of nickel wire mesh cloth?
Mesh size is also known as mesh count, mesh number. The numerical value indicates the number of openings / holes per linear inch of a nickel metal mesh. For example:
- 40 mesh nickel wire mesh has 40 holes per linear inch in both directions.
- 60 mesh nickel wire mesh possesses 60 holes per linear inch on both sides.
- 100 mesh nickel wire mesh has 100 openings per inch.
- 150 mesh nickel wire mesh has 150 holes per inch.
- There are 200 holes per linear inch for 200 mesh nickel wire mesh.
- There are 365 openings per inch for 365 mesh nickel wire mesh.
Depending on the relationship among mesh count, wire diameter and opening size, we can calculate mesh size.
- Firstly, using a micrometer to measure the wire diameter.
- Secondly, measuring the opening / hole size by ruler or vernier caliper.
- Finally, calculating mesh size.
- Mesh count = 25.4 mm / (wire diameter [mm] + opening [mm])
For coarse mesh, counting is also a good choice to confirm the mesh size. For instance,
- 10 mesh nickel wire mesh: it’s easy to figure out that there are 10 openings per inch by counting.
- 20 mesh nickel wire mesh: we can count 20 holes per inch.
For fine nickel mesh, measuring opening size is difficult. So calculating isn’t a good choice to know the mesh size.
Moreover, it’s pretty hard to confirm mesh size by counting. Because that, usually, the larger the mesh number, the more the quantity of holes per inch, the smaller the screen opening size.
However, we can know something about mesh size by microscopes.
What is 24 mesh screen?
We say it’s a 24 mesh screen if the mesh possesses 24 holes per linear inch in both directions. If the wire diameter is 0.356 mm, then the hole size is about 0.7 mm, and micron size is approximately 700. So only the particles smaller than 0.7 mm can pass through the pure nickel wire mesh cloth. And the larger ones are retained by the 24 mesh nickel mesh screen.
